Why Would An Attorney Say That His Partner No Longer Works At Their Firm When He Still Does?

I was following up on a sales call with my contact who is a partner at a law firm and accidentally dialed the wrong extension. I got another attorney who is his partner, and when I asked for my contact he told me that he no longer worked there. I later dialed the correct extension and spoke directly to my contact. Why would the other guy say that my contact was no longer there?
